Editor of the Juba Monitor Alfred Taban has been released on bail after being detained for writing an article that was critical of the leadership of President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar.
Taban was released on bail so he could receive medical treatment for a previously existing condition.
“The release of Alfred Taban through bail out from the police custody demonstrates the state authority being responsive to the public calls for Alfred Taban,” said Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization. “This is good responsible action,”
While Taban has been released on bail, he still faces charges of “publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to Southern Sudan” and “undermining the authority of or insulting the president.”
