Al-Tayyar journalists go on hunger strike over newspaper suspension

Sudanese journalists at Al-Tayyar daily newspaper have begun a hunger strike to protest what they called “arbitrary procedure” against the press and the suspension of al-Tayyar newspaper since 2015.

Sudanese journalists at Al-Tayyar daily newspaper have begun a hunger strike to protest what they called “arbitrary procedure” against the press and the suspension of al-Tayyar newspaper since 2015.

Al-Tayyar newspaper Editorial Director Khalid Fathy told Radio Tamazuj they have begun an open hunger strike with a wide participation of journalists from other media houses and Sudanese politicians and activists.

Khalid pointed out that they have started the hunger strike to protest the suspension of their newspaper by Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS).

He further added that the hunger strike will continue until the newspaper resumes publication. He confirmed that the police have pledged to protect the strikers as their commitment to the editor in chief of the newspaper.

Separately in Khartoum, a security force has entered the Center for Training and Human Development and seized properties and cars belonging to them and forced the staff to open the computers of the center in order for them to check what was inside.

Witnesses told Radio Tamazuj that the security force have arrested the Director of the Center Khalaf Afefi and other staff and released them late Monday evening.
