Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir pledged to provided clean water services to Nyala town after residents disrupted his speech there by demanding services.
Al-Bashir is currently on a tour of states in Darfur. On Monday, residents of Nyala who attended the president’s speech interrupted him by shouting, “water, water, we want,” according to several witnesses. Nyala is experiencing a decrease in clean water lately as the town’s population grows.
In response, al-Bashir pledged to provide clean water from Gereida area south of the town.
Meanwhile, residents of Kalma displacement camp in South Darfur continued their protests against the visit of President al-Bashir to Darfur, demanding his surrender to the International Criminal Court. He is wanted on accusations of genocide.
The protesters called on the International Community to put pressure on the Sudanese government to allow access to humanitarian organization to provide assistance to those affected by the recent clashes in Jebel Marra.
