Akol and IGAD team meet over peace revitalization in Khartoum

Lam Akol, leader of South Sudan’s National Democratic Movement (NDM) said he met with a team from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Khartoum where they discussed issues pertaining to revitalization of the 2015 peace accord.

Lam Akol, leader of South Sudan’s National Democratic Movement (NDM) said he met with a team from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Khartoum where they discussed issues pertaining to revitalization of the 2015 peace accord.

The meeting held on Sunday, he said, mainly focused on ways of finding meaningful solutions to the conflict in war-hit South Sudan.

“The meeting aimed at listening to views of different groups on the revitalization of the peace agreement. We have submitted a written document to the team and we clarified our position on the revitalization process,” Lam Akol told Radio Tamazuj on Monday.

Akol, a former agriculture minister in Kiir's administration, explained that the consultative meeting was led by Sudan’s foreign minister Ibrahim Ghandour and IGAD special envoy to South Sudan Ismail Wais.

Akol formed his armed movement in September 2016 after resigning from the unity government in Juba.

Last week, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) released a timetable for the revitalization forum to start consultations with South Sudanese leaders and citizens this month.
