The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) donated 17 canoes to fishermen in Jonglei on Thursday. The canoes are being distributed to communities throughout the state.
David Machar, NRC’s food security and livelihood officer, told Radio Tamazuj that canoes have been delivered to Mayen and Gakyuom villages. They will also make deliveries to Malualchaat and Pariak.
“We want to support the local fishermen in Bor County and beyond to boost food security of at least 400 beneficiaries in the state,” Machar said.
Deng Mayen, a young fishermen in Bor, said he was grateful for the donations.
“In our group of 12, we are given one, which we will be sharing in the fishing sites,” he said. “But if they can give us the one with the engine, it would be fine. But we thank them and maybe they are thinking about giving boats with the machine.”
NRC had previously donated fishing hooks to assist the community.
