Authorities in Rubkona County of Unity state confirmed that humanitarian organizations on Friday last week arrived in Nhial Diu Payam for an assessment of about 96,000 floods displaced people and delivered over 500 plastic sheets.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, the commissioner of Rubkona County in Unity state Gatluak Whichar Nyak said: “I have witnessed the airlifting and delivering of some basic shelters over 500 plastics sheets and sleeping materials such as blankets, and mosquito nets for Nhial Diu Payam flood-displaced community on Friday.”
"The UN and humanitarian organizations have only made an assessment of flood victims in Nhial Diu. They have not yet come to Rubkona County headquarters, and other areas of Pakur, Ding-ding, Panhial, and Thawic," he added.
The commissioner appeals to Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), an oil company operating in Unity state to open up roads connecting Rubkona county headquarters with the payams, and flood-affected areas.
"I am appealing to GPOC to help us in opening up the roads. Not all roads are affected by flooding. Some roads are not affected, and these roads need clearance so that people are connected to the county headquarters. Also, I am appealing to the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide the flood-displaced communities with a mobile clinic and livestock vaccinations against all water-borne diseases in Unity state," Whichar appealed.
Gattierjok Beiye, the chairperson of Rubkona County Youth Union, said that the flood-displaced communities in Rubkona County and Nhial Diu Payam have no food and are suffering from water-borne diseases, snakebites, and malaria.
He called on humanitarian agencies to urgently provide water, food, and medicine to the flood victims.
Rubkona Women's Association chairlady Madam Nyithiang Nhial said the people who are suffering as a result of the floods in Rubkona County are mostly children, women, and the elderly.
"As we speak now, it is raining, and everywhere is underwater. We need urgent help from humanitarian organizations, and people of goodwill to provide us with food items, basic shelters such as sleeping materials like blankets, mosquito nets, and medicines," she added.
She also called for the establishment of a mobile health clinic to cater to the health needs of the displaced communities.
