The African Union Peace and Security Council has endorsed the peace agreement signed by Riek Machar and Pagan Amum on 17 August, saying it is ready to help implement the deal once President Salva Kiir signs it.

In a statement released yesterday, the AU Council said that it discussed the situation in South Sudan in a meeting on Monday, endorsing the IGAD ‘Compromise Agreement’, which Kiir initially refused to sign in time to meet an IGAD deadline.

The AU Council looked forward to the announced signing on 26 August, today, calling on South Sudanese to fully support the agreement and its implementation.

It further requested the AU Commission to work together with the IGAD and UN to submit to the AU Council “concrete proposals on how best the AU could contribute to the implementation process of the Agreement, once the signing process is completed, in line with the relevant provisions of the said Agreement.”
