African Union calls for ‘unconditional withdrawal’ South Sudan from Heglig

The African Union expressed deep concerns over the escalating conflict between Sudan and South Sudan.

It calls in a press release for the 'immediate unconditional withdrawal from Heglig of the armed forces of of South Sudan'.

The AU urges Sudan and South Sudan to resolve the issues in the disputed border areas and all other oustanding issues ‘in a peaceful way in accordance with the overriding principle of establishing two viable states in Sudan and South Sudan.’

The AU also calls the government of Sudan to cease aerial bombardment and halt the support and harbouring of rebel movements.

The chair of the African Union, Thabo Mbeki, said earlier this week he hoped to reschedule a presidential summit between the Sudanese President and his South Sudanese counterpart.
