Normal activities have resumed in Al Waral refugee camp in Sudan’s White Nile State following the incident on 1 August that led to the destruction of several facilities by South Sudanese refugees in the camp, a UN agency said.

The incident was triggered by a rumour that a South Sudanese refugee from the camp had died in police custody after being arrested for stealing food. The camp was temporarily closed to UN and international NGO partners until 9 August.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its update that high level representatives from the Government of Sudan and UNHCR, the COR Commissioner and police officials, visited Al Waral immediately after the incident to help normalise the situation.

The agency said UNHCR is currently working closely with government authorities to discuss appropriate measures that can strengthen security to help avoid similar incidents in the future without isolating refugees from host communities.
