Civil society activists in Yei County said the delay in forming a new cabinet is a matter of concern, appealing to political leaders to swiftly resolve the ongoing impasse.
The main opposition SPLM-IO said on Sunday there was no final agreement yet on the selection of ministries in the coalition government.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Mustafa Adam, the chairperson of Yei Civil Society Forum said delays in naming the cabinet will create mistrust among the population.
“As Yei civil society forum, we call on the parties to compromise and ensure they agree on ministerial positions for the full implementation of the agreement. If the parties continue delaying the formation of the unity government it will frustrate the hopes of civilians,” said Mustafa.
For his part, Dara Felix, the Secretary General of the forum, said disagreements within the parties is disappointing to citizens.
“The momentum in the past few days has increased citizens’ confidence and the trust in their leaders and as a forum, we are strongly recommending peace partners to compromise,” said Dara.
He added, “We strongly recommend that they need to respect the national amendment committee to scrutinize competent people to be appointed so that the country returns to the path of development and sustainable peace”.
Under the 2018 peace agreement, the coalition government will have 35 ministries split up between the group of President Salva Kiir, the SPLM-IO of Riek Machar, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), the SPLM-FDs, and other political parties.
Kiir's side will retain 20 ministries, while Machar's group will have nine ministries. The SSOA will take three ministries, the SPLM-FDs will be given two ministries and other political parties will get one ministry.
