A leading South Sudanese activist says that citizens are fed up with false deadlines which only serve to delay peace and continue economic suffering.
“Many deadlines declared; none of them have tangible results,” said Edmund Yakani, executive director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO).
Yakani said there is now a “culture of expanding deadlines” which is delaying the peace process.
“The tactics of delaying the peace implementation benefits nobody and it is impacting negatively on the common citizens economically,” he said.
Yakani said those who are slowing down the peace implementation are directly benefiting from the delays.
“In strong terms and with due respect CEPO is calling upon the principal of armed partners to the peace agreement to have sense of rescuing the common citizens from the economic crisis by committing themselves without any delay the formation of the transitional government of national unity,” the activist stressed.
Yakani made his remarks following a statement by the SPLA-In Opposition published by Voice of America that 23 of the opposition’s generals will come to Juba on Monday.
Separately, Yakani for a second time urged the African Union Commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to have her High Representative to South Sudan former President Alpha Oumar Konaré of Mali to intervene in the situation.
“The current situation South Sudan Peace implantation is undergoing is the cornerstone of Terms of Reference for the appointment of AU high representative to South Sudan. When will it be exercised?” he asked.
