A women’s activist in Aweil says women in the state are hardest hit by the current economic crunch affecting the country and hence need programs to empower them economically.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Elizabeth Nyanut Angok, the director for Mother and Child Care organization said women are really suffering despite small initiatives to improve their livelihoods.

“The economic crisis is really affecting women more than men. And while some of us have businesses, which we start by ourselves without any external support,” she said.

Nyanut further said when women encounter financial difficulties, children suffer even more.

She added that even educated women most of whom studied in Arabic cannot secure employment to improve their lives.

“There are women who are educated and three-quarters of them studied in Arabic and they cannot be employed in many offices,” she lamented.

Nyanut called on the government and development partners to support women in the state by providing business skills to allow them to be economically secure.
