The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim for Sudan, Sheldon Yett, on Saturday condemned the bombardment of the World Food Programme (WFP) compound in Yabus in Sudan’s Blue Nile State on Thursday, 19 December.

“The violent killing of these aid workers is unconscionable,” he said while sending his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the three WFP colleagues killed.

“Obligations under the International Humanitarian Law are clear, and humanitarian workers and facilities must be protected at all times,” Yett stated. “The role of humanitarian workers across Sudan is to provide lifesaving services for people amid the ongoing conflict ravaging the country. Violence against civilians and attacks on civilian infrastructure must end.”

“I take note of the Government of Sudan’s reiteration of its commitment to adhere to International Humanitarian Law and to ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers, as well as its commitment to conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic incident,” he added.
