Abyei women union advocates food saving for hard times

Members of the civil society organizations in Abyei area are advocating for saving of some food items at home to meet their needs in hard times. The advocates, according to the Abyei Today newsletter, stressed that families shouldn’t depend on daily shopping. Afaf Arop Ajieng, chairperson of women’s union in Abyei, says cooperation is vital in families and between neighbors and relatives. “Store up some sugar, wheat flour and dry meat because these are good to save time, effort and money. Use them properly for we should be responsible” the newsletter quoted Afaf as explaining. There have been fears of sudden closure of markets, fluctuation of prices and interruption of families’ activities. The same newsletter quoted Mawut Deng Kur, member of traditional administration, stressing that people in the villages know how to save food but town had made people lazy because markets are there to buy the needs. “Town is a place where you need to have good plans; for instance when the common market was closed people suffered a lot. That’s a lesson we should learn. “Some household say they appreciate the idea but some families’ capacity are not equal and some households depend on what they can gather each day.
