Abyei school tells girls to shave their heads or risk expulsion

The authorities at Comboni schools in Agok have told girl pupils they must have their heads shaved. They say they are taking the action because some girls come to lessons with different hairstyles, while others wear wigs.

Abyei Today reports that some girls have agreed with the move because it meant they did not have to spend time getting ready at home. Others said they did not like it, because it meant there was little visual difference between girls and boys – and others because having nice hair was a source of pride which made them feel good.

Some older girls have so far refused to have their hair shaved off. A 17-year-old pupil told us she would rather leave school, or transfer to another, than lose her hair.

Pastor Stephen Biong Kuol, who is responsible for Camboni schools, is urging girls’ parents to make sure their daughters obey the rules so they can continue to attend lessons. He said the new rule was designed to bring order to the classroom.

Stephen added that Comboni school also did not allow pupils to have painted nails or earrings, or to chew gum. Anyone who wanted to could find somewhere else to study, he added.
