Floods spoiled large tracts of farmlands in the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan, several citizens told Radio Tamazuj Friday.
An Abyei native from Mach Bong village said they were planning to replant crops in order to compensate the loss, but farms are still under floodwaters.
Kiir Aguer Chol, official in the Agriculture Department, said this year’s agriculture season has failed due to flooding in the area.
Kiir told Radio Tamazuj that the agriculture office was unable to help farmers avoid the damage caused by the floods and rainfall.
He urged families to reserve the existing crops for hard times. He predicted the area may witness hunger if food shortages are not averted.
