Members of the Abyei Legislative Assembly returned from a recess of three months on Monday. They held a reopening celebration attended by the Chief Administrator Kuol Alor Kuol.

Chol Pur Chol, head of the parliamentary committee for information, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the lawmakers listened to the chief administrator’s speech.

He pointed out that Mr Alor said that his top priority was to improve development policies in the area.

Chol added that the chief administrator also promised to work for peace and reconciliation with neighboring communities.

Sudan and South Sudan are disputing the oil-rich Abyei, an area inhabited by Arab Misseriya and Ngok Dinka communities.

In October 2013, the Ngok Dinka tribe conducted a unilateral popular referendum, in which the vast majority of people voted to join South Sudan. However, neither Sudan nor South Sudan recognized the plebiscite so far.
