The Abyei Municipal Council on Tuesday launched a one-week general cleanliness campaign expected to run for a week.

Dut Piok Amuor, the municipal council's chief executive director told Radio Tamazuj, "Abyei town mayor, his deputies and the ministry of health jointly launched the general cleaning campaign in Abyei town and it will last for a week aiming for our town to look clean, healthy, and green. After finishing with the market, we will go to public institutions like ministries, police stations, schools, and health centers and clean them too."

Piok revealed that the chiefs in the area initiated the exercise a month ago urging residents to clean their compounds and environments.

He said, "We have a challenge of garbage trucks which transport garbage. We usually ask our friends to help take the waste to the garbage disposal location we have identified."

Dut Adhal Deng, a resident of Abyei hailed the initiative saying it will reduce malaria infections as people clear out their breeding grounds.
