Abyei authorities initiated a clean-up campaign owing to the accumulation of rubbish within the Abyei market.
Rumamer County Commissioner Deng Jach Dau told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the market was full of rubbish. This prompted local authorities to carry out a three-day long campaign to clean the whole market from litter.
The initiative was also supported by humanitarian organizations operating in Abyei, Dau said.
“Some organizations have donated gum boots, waste vehicle, and labour’ wages throughout the campaign,” he said. “Goal and Mercy Corp as well as Save the Children organizations are now participating with us.”
The official further said the campaign may continue for four days because litter has accumulated at the market over a long period of time.
He blamed local traders for the accumulation of waste at the market, adding that strong regulations will be imposed on traders as soon the campaign is completed.
“Any trader will be responsible for his or her own shop. Dust bins will be availed for waste” he noted.
Dau stated that the campaign will cover the market only.
Flooding and poor roads
Separately, Dau said that all residential areas were submerged by rainwater recently, forcing flood-affected people to move to higher ground to avoid waterborne diseases.
Dau called on South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) and humanitarian organizations to help the flood-affected people as soon as possible.
He also predicted the Abyei–Agok road will be repaired in the coming days collaboration from organizations.
Dau said since the roads connecting the area with neighbouring states are cut off, prices of essential commodities have increased at the market.
