Abyei Joint Oversight Committee Co-Chair Biong to resign

South Sudan’s Co-Chairman of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, Luka Biong, has informed South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, of his intention to resign from the position.

South Sudan’s Co-Chairman of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, Luka Biong, has informed South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, of his intention to resign from the position.

In a phone interview with Radio Tamazuj during his last visit to Abyei, Biong stated that he intends to return to Harvard University in the United States of America this year.

He added that his position as a fellow at Harvard would provide him an opportunity to create additional platforms in order to help resolve Abyei’s ongoing problems.

Biong described the humanitarian conditions of the returnees in Abyei as ‘terrible’ before adding that what is going on “is a tragedy and the United Nations are just watching without providing any help.”

Both Sudan and South Sudan signed an agreement late last year requiring them to demilitarize the disputed border region.  Neither side has implemented the agreement yet and further aerial and ground attacks by the Sudan Armed Forces took place last week.
