Abyei food distribution begins after 4 month wait

The World Food Programme has brought food rations to the disputed Abyei area between Sudan and South Sudan after a four month delay caused by bad roads and wet weather.

Sorghum, salt, lentils, and oil were given out to civilians in need near the Agok airstrip.

One trader in Agok told Abyei Today that sorghum prices could fall from 220 SSP per sack to 150 thanks to the new influx of food.

Dombek Anyeil, director of the Abyei Community Action for Development which is distributing the food, told the same program that recipients must have valid cards issued since 2012 to receive rations.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Commission's deputy director for Abyei Dhieu Bul said he expected only minor delays in food delivery for the rest of 2015.

Agok residents said they had been subsisting on food from relatives in rural villages while waiting for the WFP delivery.
