The Abyei Municipal Council authorities have confiscated and burned an assortment of 1,373 expired alcoholic drinks and 58 bags of maize flour.

The consignment was set ablaze inside the UNISFA compound to avert local residents accessing them if burned in a forest.

Mayor Mading Anyang last Friday reported the confiscation of the expired goods.

Anyang told Radio Tamazuj that the local traders had cooperated with his council in identifying the faulty products and thus the municipality would not sanction them.

“On Friday, one trader voluntarily reported to our office about some 1,373 cartons of expired alcohol. We sent our staff to verify and indeed, the goods were expired, and after a while, other traders reported 29kg of maize flour each, and we sent our officers and found it was true,” he said.

Anyang said the burning was done inside UNISSFA compound to avoid tampering by the Iocal residents.

“We took the expired commodities to UNISFA compound because it is fenced and would not be accessed by the local people struggling to make a living.  The traders cooperated with us and we are not sanctioning them. I urge every resident of Abyei to be on the alert and report any suspect goods,” he added.

The Minister for Local Government and the Abyei official spokesperson, Bulis Koch, confirmed the confiscation and the burning of the expired products.

“It is true there were expired goods confiscated by the Abyei town council in the market and some stores outside the town. They were taken and burned within the UNISFA compound, “he said.
