Four people are confirmed dead after an apparent cattle rustling attack in Abyei town yesterday in the disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, the spokeperson of the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) said.

Daniel Adekera said one person died in the initial attack on a cattle camp near Abyei’s Catholic Church, and two were killed as the attackers clashed with locals while trying to flee the town after coming under fire from UNISFA.

A fourth person succumbed to injuries in Agok’s MSF hospital, Adekera said. He said UNISFA has deployed troops to apprehend the perpetrators while investigations continue.

Thursday’s attack is the second deadly incident in a week in Abyei town. On 26 November a peacekeeper and a child were killed when the town was shelled by an unknown armed group.
