Abu Januk farmer killed in South Kordofan

A farmer was killed and two others wounded by gunmen in Al Sunut Locality, north-west of Kadugli in South Kordofan. The killing is possibly linked to an older feud between Abu Januk and Misseriya tribesmen, according to a local emir.

Gunmen attacked farmers at the Abu Kreisha project last week as the farmers were still in their fields at night, said Emir Saleh Ali Kajik, emir of the western mountains. One was killed and two others, named Suleiman Dhahiya and Mohamed Khater Khalifa, were injured. The victims are from the Abu Januk area.

The emir explained that the attack is being blamed on the ‘Aris section of the Misseriya Zurug.  He noted that there is an old conflict between the sons of Abu Januk and the sons of ‘Aris since four years ago when nine of the latter section were killed.

The emir said the current attack may be a revenge attack despite that the sections had reconciled over the earlier killings and blood money had been paid. In an interview aired in part on Saturday on Radio Tamazuj, Emir Kajik urged the two sides to avoid further bloodshed.
