More than 70 homes were burnt at Cuei-Adakan village of Amongpiny Payam in Lakes State early on Wednesday morning, prompting Caretaker Governor Matur Chut Dhuol to cut short an official trip to Juba to travel to the scene of the attack.

Radio Miraya reported that authorities suspect the attack was carried out by youth of the Pakam clan against the Kuie community, in revenge for a previous attack.

Matur Chut Dhuol is calling for calm as the government investigates the circumstance that led that to the incident. “I have given orders that people whose houses were burnt need not retaliate. Leave this issue to the government,” he said over the UN-run radio station.

“I am going to form a committee and everything that is taken will be registered and they will be returned immediately. I also told the youth who were planning to retaliate to return to their places. The government will take strong measures against those who did this.”

Separately in Lakes State, seven people were killed and eight wounded in inter-clan fighting in Timic village area on Thursday, which is also located in Rumbek Centre County.
