Government officials in South Sudan's Maiwut State say more than 600 South Sudanese who sought refuge in neighboring Sudan have arrived in the area last week.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday Maiwut State Information Minister Baruach Oluch Akolaton said the returnees are now sheltering in compounds of churches and schools.

He called on humanitarian aid organizations to come in and provide basic support while the state government makes arrangements to resettle them.

Oluch noted that the security situation has stabilized since the warring parties initialed the September peace deal, encouraging the return of civilians.
