The traffic police in Bentiu town in Unity State said a policewoman died after falling off a pickup truck at the roundabout near the state secretariat on Friday.
According to the traffic police boss, Domai Dak Kai, the deceased identified as Nyanyang Mattiek, was a member of the police component of the unified forces who were waiting to be passed out the next day, Saturday. He said the accident happened shortly after the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed state officials.
“After the swearing-in ceremony, Nyanyang Mattiek, a member of unified forces, fell from the car while trying to retrieve her phone which had dropped down,” he said. “As a result of the fall, she broke her neck according to the medical report. She died in the local hospital on the same day.”
Dak said accidents have been on the rise in Bentiu town and that the vehicle and driver have been detained by the traffic police.
“I want to make Bentiu town clean and there is a need to set up traffic rules,” he said. “Many accidents have occurred and there are lots of cattle in the town. I will ensure that speed bumps are installed to reduce speed in the town.”
