The police in Bor town in Jonglei State have said they have arrested and are investigating nine suspects for their alleged involvement in last week’s clashes in the Baidit area.
Last Friday, two people were killed and four others injured in clashes involving two rival communities at a fishing site in Bor County’s Baidit area.
Over the weekend, the state police commissioner, Gen. Elia Costa Faustino, said the cause of the incident was not clear.
“Some sources linked it to revenge killing while others said it is a dispute over the fishing site but as police, we are investigating the incident,” he said at the time.
However, speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, Major Majak Daniel Tuor, the state police spokesperson, said nine suspects were arrested on Wednesday and that they were being investigated and will be arraigned in court.
“There are nine suspects in our custody. Four from one side and five from the other side and they are currently being investigated,” he said.
Maj. Majak said a manhunt is still on to apprehend more suspects and that the case will be forwarded to court for trial when investigations are completed.
“The case which was opened against them is related to communal fighting which caused public disorder,” he explained. “We also charged them under section 206 of the Penal Code which is murder, and 273 which is attempted murder. So the investigation started today (Thursday) and we will forward them to court.”
