At least nine gang members were arrested on suspicion of killing a 23-year-old man gangster identified as Mamuch Chan in the Bentiu IDP camp in Unity State on Monday.
John Malith, the police spokesperson in Unity State, told Radio Tamazuj Tuesday that the nine individuals were involved in a fight that led to the death of their colleague in sector four, block nine of the camp. He said five of the suspects belonged to the Old Star gang group while the other four were from the Jamaica group.
“The members from the two gang groups were involved in a fight at the IDP camp and the deceased was called Mamuch Chan and he was from the Jamaica group team,” he explained. “Nine gang members from both sides are now under detention at Bentiu IDP Joint Forces Station and they will be taken to the police headquarters for investigation.”
“The incident was reported to us very late that is why we did not manage to arrest the real suspect who murdered the deceased,” Malith added.
The police mouthpiece said the deceased is from Panyijiar County and the main suspect hails from Mayiendit County.
“The deceased died on the spot where he was speared and did not reach the MSF Hospital,” he stated.
