A 22-year–old man was killed in Wau town of Western Bahr el Ghazal State in a suspected confrontation between security organs and a group of gangsters.
The young man was reportedly killed in a crossfire when the night security patrol exchanged fire with the suspected criminals during a birthday party at Hai Motomadia.
Wau Town Mayor Dasio William Taban told Radio Tamazuj that the security organs arrested eight youths suspected to be in possession of drugs, including marijuana.
The suspected killer is said to be from the National Security Service and was still at large.
“We got information that a civilian was shot dead yesterday. We want to tell Wau residents that what happened yesterday is a crime and that the situation is under control,” said Taban.
“The security organs are searching for the suspect; and if arrested, he will face the law,” he said.
“We are calling on the family of the victim to remain calm and that the government is doing what it can to apprehend the criminal,” he added.
“We have also arrested eight people in possession of drugs like marijuana, ice and tramadol,” he said.
Taban said the municipality would continue carrying out operations to rid the town of drugs.
Efforts to reach state police office for comments were not successful.
