700 cattle reportedly raided in Abyei Sunday

At least 700 cattle from six cattle camps were stolen on Sunday during a raid in the disputed Abyei region, Ngok Dinka authorities reported.

Deng Ali, Executive Director for Alal County, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that groups of armed men raided cattle camps at Majok-Toch along Abyei’s border with South Sudan’s Warrap state.

Ali said there were cell phone network problems but one man has so far been reported wounded.

“The owners went after their raided cattle and they met UN forces and they returned back leaving UNISFA forces to follow up the cattle,” Ali said, adding that he did not know if the UN forces had recovered the livestock yet.

The executive director said he suspected Sudanese forces were involved in the raid, saying the attackers appeared well-trained.
