A 70-year-old man identified as Alferio Imoso died by suicide on Wednesday morning in Haforiere village, Tirangore Boma of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State.

Sabanio Tiya, the chief of Tirangore Boma told Radio Tamazuj that the man’s body was found hanging from a tree by a passerby.

“The man woke up from home in the morning going to the garden but on the way, he went and hang himself there. This person died on a tree there and we went to carry him. We are trying to get intel from family members if he fought with someone,” Tiya explained. “So got the rope on his neck, his panga and spear were down. He also removed his sandals before climbing the tree.”

He adds, “It was nearly 6 am. He left his house at around 4 am. A certain woman who was also going to the garden, surprisingly found the old man hanging on the tree.”

Chief Tiya suspects that the man could have taken his own life because of his children who are involved in crimes.

“This old man we know his problem. His children have committed several crimes including theft and raids until his home was devastated. We know he died because of this,” he added.

He urged community members to resolve matters using other means other than resorting to ending one’s life.

Eastern Equatoria state youth leader David Orupi Uywek expressed dismay over the death of the elderly man for alleged crimes committed by his sons.

He appealed to the county authorities to promote peaceful coexistence by fighting increasing criminal activities.
