At least 69 people are confirmed to have died of cholera as 1,000 new cases were registered in Unity State’s Mayom County, health officials said on Monday.
Last week, a cholera vaccination campaign was launched in the four locations of Bentiu Town, Rubkona Hospital, Riohriak Payam, and Bentiu IDP Camp in Unity State.
The acting Director General at the state health ministry, Bany Makon, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that Mayom County is now leading in cholera deaths and cases.
He said that 300 of the 1,000 cases recovered from the disease and were discharged from Mayom Hospital.
“Recently, the Mayom County Health Department recorded 1,000 cases and 69 deaths, this is the total number of cholera cases and deaths cases since 19 December last year up to today (Monday),” he said. “The ministry of health has sent teams to Mayom and they arrived on Friday last week and they also deployed mobile teams to health facilities in Mayom where cholera treatment is taking place.”
Meanwhile, Ruai Tut, a resident of Mayom County, said cholera was ravaging the area.
“Cholera has killed many in our community and it has affected the community since 19 December 2024 when the first cases were recorded,” he stated.
Tut appealed to the state health ministry, county health department, and health partners to intervene in the fight against cholera and create awareness about the disease in the county.
