Local authorities in Abyei Administrative Area have confirmed that armed Messiriya youth early on Wednesday morning attacked Dukura village and killed a 60-year-old man and injured two other people, including a young woman.

Last month, armed Messiriya on horseback attacked the two villages of Kol-Bol and Making Thon and killed 33 people and injured 4 people. Earlier in the year, Abyei authorities reported several road ambushes and the deliberate killing of hunters by Messiriya tribesmen.

Nyok Deng, the Amethaguok County commissioner, said the security situation is currently calm after the intervention of UNISFA.

“The incident of Dukura happened at 5:46 am on Wednesday when Messiriya militia attacked the village and killed an old man of 60 years and injured a young woman and another man,” Commissioner Deng said. “The good thing was that UNISFA intervened and rescued the situation by chasing them (Messiriya attackers) before they killed more people.”

He added: “They Messiriya assailants burned 7 houses but the civilians are still around but living in fear.”

Meanwhile, Ajang Deng, Abyei’s information minister, confirmed the incident and said Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi who is in the area had been briefed about the situation.

“There was attacked by armed Messiriya on Dukura village of Ameth-Aguok and one person was killed and two injured. The chief administrator, Kuol Deng Kuol, briefed Vice President Hussien Abdelbagi about it,” he said.
