The police in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal State say they are investigating a young girl’s drowning Tuesday morning in Jur River County.

The state police state deputy director for the professional standard unit Major Natale Uguak Buolla told Radio Tamazuj, “What had happened is that a child by name Abuyo Ubur Uyak, six years old fell into a water well in Kangi Payam of Jur River County in the early hours of yesterday (Tuesday).”

He adds, “The late was sent to fetch water in a nearby well that is three meters deep. Unfortunately, the child fell into the water and drowned on the spot because she was alone at the well. Nobody was nearby to rescue the child.”

Major Uguak said investigations have been launched into the matter.

Uyak Ubur, the late’s stepfather, urged his family members to remain calm as the incident is already creating tension between the family and the in-laws since the child was staying in her elder sister’s matrimonial home.

“Am calling upon the two families that this problem should not escalate, death can occur through any means. I am asking the two families not to get into conflict with each other,” he appealed.
