6,000 returnees, 2,700 refugees arrive in Northern Bahr el Ghazal

According to the agency, 6,165 (individual) South Sudanese returnees and 1,233 households are stationing in Majok Yinh Thiou, Kiir Adem, Mayom Angok and other areas in Aweil and North Counties.   Meanwhile, 2,700 Sudanese refugees with 548 households were also registered in the same areas.           

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the Chairperson for Northern Bahr el Ghazal State’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, Dut Majokdit, said the war victims have arrived in the states following the fighting in Sudan. 

He said the people who fled the conflict in Sudanese several states like North Darfur, South Darfur, East Darfur and West Darfur States.

“Regarding the fighting in Sudan on the 15th of April we experienced mass displacement from different states in Sudan who entered in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State via six entry points of Mayom Angok, Kiir Kangbek, Kiir Adem, Jaac, Majok Yinh Thiou and Rumaker,” Majokdit explained.

Majokdit concluded that the refugees and returnees lack food and other non-food items, including medicines. He has appealed to humanitarian organizations to come to address the needs of those escaping war in Sudan.   

Aweil North County Commissioner Victorino Ken Akoon has admitted for the first time the arrival of Sudanese refugees in his county and said he heard reports of a new influx of both refugees and returnees on a daily basis.   

“I visited them on Saturday last week and got all Sudanese refugees and South Sudanese returnees who escaped the war in Sudan. The refugees were 2,700 individuals, and I heard that there were good numbers of returnees and returnees in Kiir Kangbek,” Ken said.
