A herdsman was injured and 562 cows raided when an armed group clashed with local youth in Duk County of Jonglei State on Wednesday, a local official said.
Duk County Executive Director Elijah Manyok told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the incident occurred in the area of Duk Padiet.
“The armed group attacked a cattle camp and made away with over 1,000 cows. After our youth pursued and clashed with them, about 450 cows were recovered while 562 others are still missing. Some of our youth are still after the attackers. During the attack, one person was injured,” said Manyok.
He added, “The injured herdsman is receiving treatment at a health facility within the county”.
The local official said the area is now calm despite the incident.
For decades, cattle rustling has remained a challenge among the pastoral communities in the Greater Jonglei region where several lives have been lost and property destroyed.
