55,000 South Sudanese flee hunger to Sudan so far this year

55,000 South Sudanese people have arrived to Sudan’s East Darfur, South Darfur and West Kordofan states since January to escape hunger, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said in its weekly humanitarian bulletin.

OCHA said 43,000 South Sudanese refugees arrived in East Darfur state and 3,800 arrived in South Darfur state, while 8,400 arrived in West Kordofan state.

The UN office pointed out that new arrivals of South Sudanese refugees is due to shortages of food in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal, and Warrap states as a result of the conflict in the country.

The United Nation High Commission of Refugee is seeking to meet the needs of the refugees amid an expected increase in the number displaced people from South Sudan.
