Fifty Sudanese health workers based in Renk county have been dismissed by the Upper Nile state ministry of health, according to the acting medical director of Renk civil hospital, Dr Nyandeng Deng Chol.

She told Radio Tamazuj that the decision was taken on the 20th of March, but that the suspended staff were given one month’s notice.

Many of the suspended staff are nurses and administrative staff and will reportedly receive their salaries for the months of February and March.

Nyandeng further confirmed that the state ministry has pledged to respond to any appeals to the decision if any complainant has one parent with roots in South Sudan or if their parents were settled in the country before 1954.

This was not the first decision of its kind taken in Renk County who recently also dismissed a considerable number of Sudanese teachers at both primary and secondary level.  However, a number of those teachers complained of discrimination in that the decision was based, they claim, only on their names as many claimed to have been born in South Sudan.
