5 pregnant women die due to poor healthcare in Leer County

Authorities of the SPLM-IO rebel group in Leer County say people are experiencing deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to lack of food and other basic services.

SPLA-IO spokesman in Leer County James Yoach told Radio Tamazuj that earlier fighting between the opposition fighters and government troops forced many families to flee to swampy areas and neighbouring counties.

He said that about five pregnant women died in early November due to poor primary healthcare in Leer County, saying no health services reached the county since last May.

“Early this month, about five pregnant women have died, now we are trying to bring pregnant women to Panyijiar County to receive treatment, but there is the issue of poor road,” he said.

He called the international community to put pressure on the government to allow international NGOs to provide services to the conflict-affected people. He also urged President Salva Kiir’s government to adhere to the signed peace agreement.
