Authorities of the defunct Eastern and Western Lakes States confirmed five people were killed and two others wounded in intercommunal fighting between Rumbek East and Yirol West Counties on Monday.
The five people killed include two soldiers from SSPDF and three civilians.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the deputy police commissioner of police Brigadier General Makur Dak said the two soldiers were killed in Alualuak while attempting to prevent fighting between Rumbek East and Yirol West Counties' youth.
"I am currently in Rumbek East county headquarters of Aduel waiting for a vehicle to take me to Akot and Alualuak where clashes occurred. Now, I can confirm to you that only five people are still confirmed dead and two others wounded," said Makur Dak.
Dak said the security forces have not yet gathered enough details of the houses torched in Mayom-cuei and Alualuak, but many houses were burned.
The secretary-general of defunct Eastern Lakes State Barnaba Mayor Deng identified five people killed as Malak Maluth, Apac Deng, Madok, Awan Makur, and Chier Majok from the feuding counties.
According to him, about ten houses were burnt in both Mayom-cuei and Alualuak payams.
He confirmed that fighting ceased since Monday evening and Tuesday was generally calm and stable.
"We have deployed forces at the scene of Monday's clashes in Alualuak Payam and Akot," Mayor added.
However, the Executive Director in the area, Mr. Benjamin Mayor said people have been displaced and many live in fear of reprisal attacks.
He appeals to the national government to disarm the civilians of Lakes State as a measure to reduce intercommunal fighting.
