At least five women who were allegedly abducted by gunmen at Sopiri area in Yei River County have been released, a female activist said.
The five women were reportedly kidnaped from their farms by a group of gunmen believed to be members of the opposition in June.
Hawa Adam, chairperson of the women’s association in Yei, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the missing women had been released in Yei. She welcomed the release of the five women in Yei.
“We are very grateful as women of Yei River State that our five women have been released. They are also safe and happy return home,” she said.
Hawa called on the government and human rights organizations to support the five ladies, while urging the warring parties to protect rights of women and children.
Separately, Hawa said a 10-year-old girl and a 16-year-old year teenager were sexually assaulted in Yei River County last week. The activist condemned the incident in the strongest terms possible.
