The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the State Ministry of Local Government in Lakes State have organized a three-month training on good governance, equitable service delivery and peace in the state.
The training, targeting a total of 48 participants; 19 females and 29 males, opened in Rumbek on Wednesday.
The chairperson of the Specialized Committee of Local Government, Peace and Security in Lakes State transitional assembly, Kaman Makuenyar, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the training would change the governance and the rule of law in Lakes State.
“I am here to briefly comment on the importance of this event as a chair for local government. I want to start by sending my appreciation to the ministry and the government of Lakes State for initiating this important training,” said Makuenyar.
“I would also want to recognize the support from UNDP for so long. They have been supporting this kind of training throughout and we appreciate your support. To the participants and those who are going to benefit, I want to tell you that these kinds of training opportunities are very limited,” he added.
UNDP resident representative, Dominic Samuel, said that the programme was not just an event. “It is a key intervention of our mission to foster sustainable development peace and prosperity across the community,” he said.
Samuel expressed gratitude to the government of South Sudan and the leadership of Lakes State for their unwavering support and collaboration.
“Your dedication to empowering local government structures is commendable and essential for the progress of our community.”
Samuel said that in the 2021, in partnership with the local government board, UNDP conducted several trainings for local authorities across all the 10 states and three administrative areas.
“You play a crucial role in delivering services, fostering the development and making internal peace and security,” he said.
The training, he explained, is designed to equip people with skills, knowledge and tools to perform their duties effectively and efficiently.
“Over the next three months you will engage in comprehensive training models, covering areas of public administration, financial management, conflicts resolutions, and community engagement,” he said.
The Minister of Local Government, Chol Kuotwel Manhom, said the training of the administrative officers was the best things that happened in Lakes State.
