42 dead in 'declining' South Sudan cholera outbreak

There have been 1,411 cases of cholera in South Sudan this year but the outbreak now appears to be subsiding.

42 people have died from the disease in Central Equatoria and Jonglei states since the first case was confirmed on 1 June.

"New cases are on the decline and the case fatality rate has dropped from 10 to three per cent," said child welfare agency UNICEF in its weekly situation report.

The group said health organizations must continue to scale up prevention and awareness activities to ensure the outbreak is fully brought under control.

An outbreak last year killed 167 people out of over 5,000 total cases.
