Ngok Dinka elders say nearly four thousand people fled Marial Achak village east of Abyei town after Monday’s attack by about 100 Misseriya raiders left at least six people dead.

Three thousand villagers moved south of the river known locally as the Kiir, while about 800 are in Rummamer, just north of the river, the elders said.

Three Ngok Dinka people were killed in the attack on Marial Achak before United Nations peacekeepers repulsed the raiders, killing three and capturing four, according to the UN.

Deputy director of the RRC in Abyei, Dhieu Bul Deng, said humanitarian agencies are assessing the needs of the displaced and urged people to return home.

Marial Achak primary school teacher Aguek Arop Ajieng said displaced parents should register their children at other schools so they can continue learning while waiting to go home.
