Four people were killed and seven others injured when a commuter vehicle overturned along the Aweil-Wau road on Thursday, Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal State traffic police confirmed.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj at the traffic police base in Aweil, Capt. Yai Mohamed Ater, the acting director of the Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal traffic police, said the incident happened on Thursday in the area between Pongo and War-Aher and attributed the accident to speeding.
“The incident occurred in an area between Pongo and War-Aher because the driver was driving at a very high speed leading to him losing control which made the car overturn. The dead were a woman called Elizabeth Akeen Mayen 23, Achol 9, and a daughter of Elizabeth, Nyibol Marial Chol 20, and Ngany Mum 35. The wounded are admitted at the hospital with minor cases,’’ said Yai.
The police officer revealed that the driver is in critical condition and that no arrest has been made. He warned drivers and riders to control their speed to ensure the lives of passengers are preserved.
Aweil Civil Hospital director, Dr. Wol Wol Akeen, said they received four dead, including a child, and seven people were admitted with minor injuries except one who is in critical condition.
He said, “Yesterday at 5 pm we received the injured and dead people from the accident that took place along Wau-Aweil road and in that incident four people died, three adults and one child. The injured people have different conditions.’’
Garang Amuk, a representative of the Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal transport operators said, “The incident that took place in War-Aher where people died is an unfortunate accident. As travel agents in Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal, we are extending condolence messages to the victims’ families and we also wish the injured a quick recovery.”
