At least four people have been killed and six others sustained injuries when a commercial motor boat came under attack along the Nile River on Friday. The boat, which had departed from Panyijiar County in Unity State, was en route to Juba when it encountered violence in the Nyirol County area near Lakes State.
Elijah Thongbor, the Secretary General of the Boat Traders Union in Jonglei State, spoke exclusively to Radio Tamazuj about the harrowing event. “The boat left Tiek Port in Panyijiar County, carrying passengers from Jonglei State—specifically Ayod and Duk Counties,” Thongbor explained. “We have confirmed 4 people dead and 6 wounded. These are the traders and innocent students heavily rely on river transport.”
Thongbor urgently called upon the South Sudanese government to take decisive action. “We believe that the unknown gunmen responsible for this attack are from neighboring Lakes State,” he emphasized. “Lives have been lost, and we cannot afford any more casualties. The government must prioritize the safety of our traders and travellers.”
The Boat Traders Union insists that swift government intervention is necessary to prevent further tragedies and protect citizens.
