At least four people were killed and five others injured when armed men ambushed a vehicle along the Yei-Maridi road on Sunday, an eyewitness and police said.
A 19-year-old lady and three government soldiers were among the dead.
One eyewitness who identified himself as Sebit told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the five injured soldiers were taken to Yei Civil Hospital for treatment.
“Yesterday [Sunday] at around 11:00 am, a 19-year-old girl was killed in a road ambush at Mile 16 on the Yei-Maridi road. As members of Tore county community, we condemn these violations,” Sebit said.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Yoasa Lujang Kamba, the police commissioner for the now defunct Yei River State said two ambushes occurred on Yei-Maridi and Yei-Lainya roads on Sunday.
He accused forces under the opposition National Salvation Front (NAS) of ambushing military cars on highways as well as abducting civilians.
“A military car was attacked on the Yei-Maridi road yesterday [Sunday] and a lady killed. Three soldiers were also killed and five others injured. Another ambush occurred at Koya at about 2:00 pm where a vehicle was burnt and three people abducted,” Lujang said.
Radio Tamazuj could not reach NAS officials to comment on the matter.
