Authorities in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state announced the formation of an investigation committee into last Thursday’s shooting and injury of Mundri West MP Joseph Ngere.
Four days after Ngere was shot, Mundri West’s acting commissioner John Cleopa announced that the team will visit the crime scene. He said the team comprises of government operatives, local police, and county representatives.
“They will talk to the local people to gather their understanding of the situation and to generally conduct assessment of the situation,” Cleopa told Radio Tamazuj Monday.
Ngere was shot in what appeared to be a targeted assassination attempt. The MP was returning home from a funeral when gunmen jumped out from under a tree, asked the MP his name, and opened fire, wounding him in the leg.
Cleopa added: “The security situation here is ok. It is calm and normal. People are going about their normal businesses. Buses are coming from Juba and returning normally. But because of the safety of the passengers, we decided to provide escort.”
