The police in Lakes State have confirmed that at least four people have been arrested in connection with the death of a 19-year woman in the Adior area of Yirol East County on Thursday last week.
The deceased is reported to have been pregnant and refused to marry her lover which angered her family, some of who are now accused of beating her to death.
The acting police spokesperson in Lakes State, Moses Machuoc Bol, confirmed that the deceased was beaten to death by her brother and uncle. He said the two suspects, a local chief and the man responsible for the pregnancy had been detained.
“We have arrested 4 people; one is the brother of the impregnated girl identified as Marial Matur Laat and their uncle Madeng Jok Duop.” He said. “The others are Chief Yai Abuk who ordered the release of the girl from the police to the brother who later on beat her to death and the man who impregnated her called Mabor Dhieu Aru.”
He said an investigation into the murder was ongoing in Yirol East County.
Meanwhile, the executive director of Yirol East County, Dhuor Apiu, confirmed the arrests and said before the woman was killed, she was taken to the local chief who surrendered her to her family.
“The government has intervened and apprehended all the brothers and the man who impregnated her,” he explained. “When this girl got pregnant, she was taken before the local court headed by a chief but she refused marriage and her family demanded that she be handed over to them. The chief surrendered the girl to her parents and this is when the brothers took and beat her to death.”
